Improve error messages in types

**Feature request**
It would be great to have filtering for data.

**Use case**
Many users need this functionality for production deployments.

**Implementation idea**
Add a new config option `enable_filtering` with default `false`.

The issue names no files, tests, or entry points, and its title conflicts with the filtering request in the body. First clarify whether the goal is improved type error messages or an enable_filtering option, then locate the relevant configuration and data-handling entry points. Done should include a documented behavior and tests for the agreed scope, including the option's false default if filtering is selected.
