Add unit tests for helpers

**Feature request**
It would be great to have monitoring for auth.

**Use case**
Many users need this functionality for production deployments.

**Implementation idea**
Add a new config option `enable_monitoring` with default `false`.

The issue does not name any files, tests, or entry points. Start by locating the authentication configuration and existing helper unit tests, then determine where monitoring is handled. Done should include the disabled-by-default enable_monitoring option and coverage for its behavior.
