Improve controllers performance

**Feature request**
It would be great to have monitoring for auth.

**Use case**
Many users need this functionality for production deployments.

**Implementation idea**
Add a new config option `enable_monitoring` with default `false`.

No file, test, or entry point is named. Start by locating the controller authentication flow and configuration handling, then determine where production monitoring belongs. Done means an `enable_monitoring` option defaults to `false` and authentication monitoring is available when enabled, with coverage for both settings.
