Refactor types for better readability

**Feature request**
It would be great to have logging for api.

**Use case**
Many users need this functionality for production deployments.

**Implementation idea**
Add a new config option `enable_logging` with default `false`.

The issue names no files, tests, or entry points. First locate where configuration options are defined and where API activity is handled, then clarify the expected logging output. Done means enable_logging defaults to false and API logging is available when it is enabled.
