Improve error messages in api

**Feature request**
It would be great to have retry for types.

**Use case**
Many users need this functionality for production deployments.

**Implementation idea**
Add a new config option `enable_retry` with default `false`.

The issue names no files or tests. Start by locating the API type-handling path and the configuration entry points, then inspect existing API tests for retry behavior. Done means a default-disabled enable_retry option is supported and retry behavior for the relevant types is covered by tests.
