Optimize helpers for large datasets

**Feature request**
It would be great to have monitoring for auth.

**Use case**
Many users need this functionality for production deployments.

**Implementation idea**
Add a new config option `enable_monitoring` with default `false`.

The issue names no files, tests, or entry points. Start by locating configuration parsing and the authentication path, then determine where monitoring belongs and how configuration is exposed. Done means the new enable_monitoring option defaults to false and the requested authentication monitoring behavior is covered by tests.
