Improve types performance

**Feature request**
It would be great to have encryption for data.

**Use case**
Many users need this functionality for production deployments.

**Implementation idea**
Add a new config option `enable_encryption` with default `false`.

The issue names only a new enable_encryption config option and does not identify files, tests, or an entry point. First locate configuration handling and clarify the data, algorithms, key management, and validation expected; done requires an agreed scope and coverage suitable for production deployment.
