Add unit tests for auth

**Feature request**
It would be great to have sorting for auth.

**Use case**
Many users need this functionality for production deployments.

**Implementation idea**
Add a new config option `enable_sorting` with default `false`.

No files or tests are identified. First locate the authentication configuration and existing unit-test suite, then clarify what auth data should be sorted and how enable_sorting affects it; done should include the new option, its false default, and tests for the expected sorting behavior.
