Improve error messages in parsers

**Feature request**
It would be great to have encryption for routes.

**Use case**
Many users need this functionality for production deployments.

**Implementation idea**
Add a new config option `enable_encryption` with default `false`.

The issue names no files, tests, or entry points. Start by locating route handling and configuration parsing, then determine how encryption would apply to routes and where the enable_encryption option belongs. Done should include a documented default of false and a defined, tested behavior for encrypted routes.
