Improve error messages in models

It would be great to have compression for auth.

**Use case**
Many users need this functionality for production deployments.

**Implementation idea**
Add a new config option `enable_compression` with default `false`.

Determine where a new enable_compression option belongs, confirm that its default is false, and identify how compression should affect production deployments.
