Optimize lib for large datasets

**Feature request**
It would be great to have notifications for types.

**Use case**
Many users need this functionality for production deployments.

**Implementation idea**
Add a new config option `enable_notifications` with default `false`.

No files or tests are named. Start by locating the configuration handling and the code for types or notifications, then clarify what events and recipients the notifications cover. Done should include an `enable_notifications` option defaulting to `false` and verified notification behavior for the agreed use case.
