Optimize types for large datasets

**Feature request**
It would be great to have timeout for lib.

**Use case**
Many users need this functionality for production deployments.

**Implementation idea**
Add a new config option `enable_timeout` with default `false`.

The issue mentions only lib and a new enable_timeout configuration option; first locate the configuration entry point and any existing timeout handling. Confirm what the timeout applies to and how it should behave before changing anything. Done means enable_timeout defaults to false and the agreed timeout behavior is covered by the relevant checks.
