Add rate limiting for sorting

**Feature request**
It would be great to have compression for controllers.

**Use case**
Many users need this functionality for production deployments.

**Implementation idea**
Add a new config option `enable_compression` with default `false`.

First reconcile the title's request for rate limiting sorting with the body’s request for controller compression; the payload names no files, tests, or entry points. Confirm the intended feature, affected configuration and controller locations, expected default behavior, and acceptance tests before starting; done means the agreed behavior is implemented and verified.
