Add TypeScript types for core

**Feature request**
It would be great to have sorting for core.

**Use case**
Many users need this functionality for production deployments.

**Implementation idea**
Add a new config option `enable_sorting` with default `false`.

Start by locating the core configuration entry point and existing config options, then compare the requested TypeScript types in the title with the sorting behavior described in the body. Confirm whether the intended result is core sorting, the enable_sorting option with a false default, or both, and define done with a focused test or documented verification.
