Improve error messages in store

**Feature request**
It would be great to have caching for routes.

**Use case**
Many users need this functionality for production deployments.

**Implementation idea**
Add a new config option `enable_caching` with default `false`.

The issue names no files, tests, or entry points. Start by locating route handling and configuration code, then determine how route caching should behave and how the enable_caching default is represented; done means production route caching is controlled by that option and its default remains false.
