Improve error messages in utils

**Feature request**
It would be great to have compression for store.

**Use case**
Many users need this functionality for production deployments.

**Implementation idea**
Add a new config option `enable_compression` with default `false`.

No files or tests are named. Start by locating the store implementation and the configuration parsing or defaults, then determine how compression should apply to stored data. Done means the new enable_compression option defaults to false and enables compression for the store when set to true.
