Refactor types for better readability

**Feature request**
It would be great to have caching for types.

**Use case**
Many users need this functionality for production deployments.

**Implementation idea**
Add a new config option `enable_caching` with default `false`.

No file, test, or entry point is named. Start by locating the configuration handling and the existing type-processing path, then determine how caching should work for production deployments; done means adding enable_caching with a default of false and covering the intended behavior.
