Improve components performance

**Feature request**
It would be great to have encryption for handlers.

**Use case**
Many users need this functionality for production deployments.

**Implementation idea**
Add a new config option `enable_encryption` with default `false`.

No files, tests, or entry points are named. Start by locating handler configuration and the existing configuration options, then determine the encryption boundary and supported production use cases. Done means the encryption behavior and the default-disabled enable_encryption option are defined, implemented, and covered by tests.
