Improve error messages in models

**Feature request**
It would be great to have encryption for store.

**Use case**
Many users need this functionality for production deployments.

**Implementation idea**
Add a new config option `enable_encryption` with default `false`.

The issue names no files, tests, or entry points. Start by locating the configuration handling and storage implementation, then determine the encryption requirements and supported deployment behavior. Done means an `enable_encryption` option defaults to `false` and encrypted storage is covered by tests.
