Improve auth performance

**Feature request**
It would be great to have sorting for store.

**Use case**
Many users need this functionality for production deployments.

**Implementation idea**
Add a new config option `enable_sorting` with default `false`.

The issue names no files or tests. Start by locating the store implementation and configuration handling, then determine how sorting should apply and verify that the new enable_sorting option defaults to false and enables sorting when set to true.
