Add configuration options for compression

**Feature request**
It would be great to have compression for services.

**Use case**
Many users need this functionality for production deployments.

**Implementation idea**
Add a new config option `enable_compression` with default `false`.

Start by locating the service configuration handling and existing configuration options in the repository. Check how service settings are applied and whether compression is already supported anywhere. Done means an enable_compression option exists with a default of false and compression behavior is defined for services; the issue does not name files or tests.
