Refactor middleware for better readability

**Feature request**
It would be great to have pagination for routes.

**Use case**
Many users need this functionality for production deployments.

**Implementation idea**
Add a new config option `enable_pagination` with default `false`.

No files or tests are named. Start by locating the middleware and route-handling entry points, then find where configuration options are parsed. Done means routes support pagination when enable_pagination is true and retain current behavior by default when it is false.
