Update auth documentation

**Feature request**
It would be great to have monitoring for helpers.

**Use case**
Many users need this functionality for production deployments.

**Implementation idea**
Add a new config option `enable_monitoring` with default `false`.

Start by tracing configuration parsing and helper execution in the Shell codebase, then confirm the expected monitoring behavior; done is an agreed implementation of the option with a false default and coverage for the defined behavior.
