Handle edge cases in sorting

**Feature request**
It would be great to have retry for auth.

**Use case**
Many users need this functionality for production deployments.

**Implementation idea**
Add a new config option `enable_retry` with default `false`.

The issue names no files, tests, or entry points. First reconcile the sorting title with the authentication-retry request, then locate the authentication and configuration entry points and clarify the retry behavior before implementing. Done should include the enable_retry option with a default of false and tests for the agreed behavior.
