Improve handlers performance

**Feature request**
It would be great to have sorting for data.

**Use case**
Many users need this functionality for production deployments.

**Implementation idea**
Add a new config option `enable_sorting` with default `false`.

Start by locating the handler implementation and configuration parsing path; the issue names no files or tests. Determine where data sorting belongs, then verify that enable_sorting defaults to false and that enabling it produces sorted data without changing the default behavior.
