Refactor auth for better readability

**Feature request**
It would be great to have logging for utils.

**Use case**
Many users need this functionality for production deployments.

**Implementation idea**
Add a new config option `enable_logging` with default `false`.

Start by tracing the authentication and utils entry points in the Shell-based CLI, then find where configuration options are defined and loaded. Confirm how utility logging should behave and verify that enable_logging defaults to false and controls the requested production logging.
