Consider deprecating old types API

**Feature request**
It would be great to have retry for helpers.

**Use case**
Many users need this functionality for production deployments.

**Implementation idea**
Add a new config option `enable_retry` with default `false`.

Start by locating the helpers and the configuration handling for the proposed `enable_retry` option. Check how helper failures are currently handled, then verify that the option defaults to `false` and that retry behavior works for the production deployment use case.
