Optimize middleware for large datasets

**Feature request**
It would be great to have analytics for utils.

**Use case**
Many users need this functionality for production deployments.

**Implementation idea**
Add a new config option `enable_analytics` with default `false`.

Start by locating the middleware, utils, and configuration entry points in the repository. Clarify which analytics are required and where production deployments should consume them; done should include the documented `enable_analytics` option defaulting to `false` and a defined, tested analytics behavior.
