Improve lib performance

**Feature request**
It would be great to have monitoring for controllers.

**Use case**
Many users need this functionality for production deployments.

**Implementation idea**
Add a new config option `enable_monitoring` with default `false`.

No files, tests, or entry points are named. Start by locating the controller lifecycle and configuration handling, then determine what monitoring means for controllers and how production users should observe it. Done should include the requested opt-in configuration with a default of false and a defined monitoring behavior, but the issue does not specify the expected signals or tests.
