Improve hooks performance

**Feature request**
It would be great to have search for middleware.

**Use case**
Many users need this functionality for production deployments.

**Implementation idea**
Add a new config option `enable_search` with default `false`.

No files, tests, or entry points are named. Start by locating middleware configuration and the existing handling for search-related behavior, then determine how the `enable_search` option should affect middleware search. Done should include the option defaulting to `false` and verified search behavior for production deployments.
