Improve auth performance

**Feature request**
It would be great to have timeout for components.

**Use case**
Many users need this functionality for production deployments.

**Implementation idea**
Add a new config option `enable_timeout` with default `false`.

No file or test is named. Start by locating the component configuration and authentication-related code, then trace how configuration options are parsed and applied. Done should mean that `enable_timeout` is accepted with a default of `false` and that the intended timeout behavior is covered, but the timeout scope and semantics need clarification.
