Improve api performance

**Feature request**
It would be great to have analytics for hooks.

**Use case**
Many users need this functionality for production deployments.

**Implementation idea**
Add a new config option `enable_analytics` with default `false`.

Start by tracing how hooks are handled and where existing configuration options are defined. Determine what analytics for hooks should measure and how production users would consume it. Done means a documented `enable_analytics` option defaults to `false` and the requested hook analytics behavior is defined and verified.
