Optimize core for large datasets

**Feature request**
It would be great to have backup for components.

**Use case**
Many users need this functionality for production deployments.

**Implementation idea**
Add a new config option `enable_backup` with default `false`.

No files, tests, or entry points are named. Start by locating the core configuration handling and the component lifecycle, then determine what component backup means for production deployments; done should include the new enable_backup option defaulting to false and verified backup behavior.
