Improve validation performance

**Feature request**
It would be great to have backup for types.

**Use case**
Many users need this functionality for production deployments.

**Implementation idea**
Add a new config option `enable_backup` with default `false`.

Start by locating configuration parsing and the validation path, then determine how backup for types should behave in production deployments; done means the `enable_backup` option defaults to `false` and the agreed backup behavior is covered by tests.
