Improve error messages in store

**Feature request**
It would be great to have compression for types.

**Use case**
Many users need this functionality for production deployments.

**Implementation idea**
Add a new config option `enable_compression` with default `false`.

No files, tests, or entry points are named. Start by locating the store implementation and configuration entry point, then determine which types the request covers. Done means an `enable_compression` option defaults to `false` and the intended compression behavior is verified for supported types.
