Consider deprecating old core API

**Feature request**
It would be great to have serialization for store.

**Use case**
Many users need this functionality for production deployments.

**Implementation idea**
Add a new config option `enable_serialization` with default `false`.

Start by locating the configuration handling and the store implementation, then determine the intended serialization format and behavior for production deployments. Done should include an `enable_serialization` option defaulting to `false` and verified serialization behavior.
