Refactor lib for better readability

Currently helpers lacks proper filtering support.

Add configurable filtering with sensible defaults.

No file, test, or entry point is named. Start by locating the helpers implementation and documenting its current filtering behavior, then determine how configurable filters and defaults should be represented. Done means filtering works with sensible defaults and is covered by relevant tests.
