Add unit tests for config

**Feature request**
It would be great to have sorting for api.

**Use case**
Many users need this functionality for production deployments.

**Implementation idea**
Add a new config option `enable_sorting` with default `false`.

Start by locating the configuration handling and the API code responsible for sorting. Read the existing config tests and related API tests, then verify that enable_sorting defaults to false and that the intended sorting behavior is covered by unit tests.
