Optimize auth for large datasets

**Feature request**
It would be great to have retry for lib.

**Use case**
Many users need this functionality for production deployments.

**Implementation idea**
Add a new config option `enable_retry` with default `false`.

The issue names only lib and the enable_retry configuration option; start by locating the authentication entry point and existing configuration handling. Establish where retry behavior belongs and verify that the default false setting preserves current behavior; done means the requested behavior is covered by relevant tests.
