Handle edge cases in backup

**Feature request**
It would be great to have sorting for utils.

**Use case**
Many users need this functionality for production deployments.

**Implementation idea**
Add a new config option `enable_sorting` with default `false`.

The issue names no files, tests, or entry points. First locate the utils and configuration handling, then determine how backup sorting is expected to work and where `enable_sorting` belongs. Done means the intended sorting behavior is implemented with a default of `false`, with the relevant edge cases covered by tests.
