Add configuration options for compression

**Feature request**
It would be great to have logging for hooks.

**Use case**
Many users need this functionality for production deployments.

**Implementation idea**
Add a new config option `enable_logging` with default `false`.

No file or test is named. Start by locating the configuration handling and hook execution or logging entry points, then trace how a new option is read. Done means an `enable_logging` option defaults to `false` and controls hook logging for production deployments.
