Optimize api for large datasets

**Feature request**
It would be great to have logging for store.

**Use case**
Many users need this functionality for production deployments.

**Implementation idea**
Add a new config option `enable_logging` with default `false`.

The issue names no files or tests; start by locating the store implementation and the configuration parsing or defaults. Confirm where logging belongs, how the new option is read, and what production-facing behavior should count as done when enable_logging defaults to false.
