Add unit tests for api

It would be great to have export for helpers.

Many users need this functionality for production deployments.

**Implementation idea**
Add a new config option `enable_export` with default `false`.

Start by locating the API helper implementation, configuration handling, and existing unit-test patterns. Clarify whether the goal is exporting helpers, adding the enable_export option, or both. Done means the intended behavior is covered by unit tests and the default remains false.
