Improve store performance

**Feature request**
It would be great to have pagination for data.

**Use case**
Many users need this functionality for production deployments.

**Implementation idea**
Add a new config option `enable_pagination` with default `false`.

The issue names no files, tests, or entry points. Start by locating the store implementation, configuration handling, and current data retrieval path. Done would require an opt-in enable_pagination setting with a false default, defined pagination behavior, and tests covering the resulting behavior.
