Improve error messages in lib

**Feature request**
It would be great to have filtering for types.

**Use case**
Many users need this functionality for production deployments.

**Implementation idea**
Add a new config option `enable_filtering` with default `false`.

The issue does not name a file or test. Start by locating configuration handling and the code path that processes resource types, then determine how filtering should behave when enable_filtering is false or true. Done means the option defaults to false and type filtering works for the stated production use case.
