Handle edge cases in filtering

It would be great to have monitoring for controllers.

**Use case**
Many users need this functionality for production deployments.

**Implementation idea**
Add a new config option `enable_monitoring` with default `false`.

Start by locating the controller and configuration entry points in the repository, then trace how controller behavior is exposed during production deployments. Define the monitoring behavior and verify that the new enable_monitoring option defaults to false and changes behavior only when enabled.
