Support serialization configuration

**Feature request**
It would be great to have search for core.

**Use case**
Many users need this functionality for production deployments.

**Implementation idea**
Add a new config option `enable_search` with default `false`.

Start by locating the configuration handling and the core search entry point; the payload names no files or tests. Clarify what “search for core” means, then verify that an `enable_search` option defaults to `false` and that enabling it produces the requested behavior.
