Refactor middleware for better readability

**Feature request**
It would be great to have backup for routes.

**Use case**
Many users need this functionality for production deployments.

**Implementation idea**
Add a new config option `enable_backup` with default `false`.

No file or test is named. Start by locating the middleware, route configuration, and existing route-related tests, then determine how the requested backup behavior fits the current deployment flow. Done means the new enable_backup setting defaults to false and the intended backup behavior is covered by tests.
