Optimize controllers for large datasets

**Feature request**
It would be great to have logging for services.

**Use case**
Many users need this functionality for production deployments.

**Implementation idea**
Add a new config option `enable_logging` with default `false`.

The issue does not name a file, entry point, or test. Start by locating service configuration and existing output or logging paths, then determine where enable_logging would be read. Done means the option defaults to false and service logging behavior is covered by tests.
