Consider deprecating old config API

**Feature request**
It would be great to have sorting for helpers.

**Use case**
Many users need this functionality for production deployments.

**Implementation idea**
Add a new config option `enable_sorting` with default `false`.

No files, tests, or entry points are named. Start by locating the configuration API and helper-loading path, then inspect any related tests; establish the intended helper ordering and verify that sorting is disabled by default and changes behavior only when enable_sorting is enabled.
